Rakesh Kumar

Rakesh Kumar, born on January 13, 1985, in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir, is a remarkable Indian para-archer whose life story reflects immense resilience and determination. In 2010, his life changed drastically after a serious road accident left him paralyzed from the waist down, confining him to a wheelchair. The emotional toll was immense, and he battled severe depression, even contemplating suicide three times.

However, a turning point came in 2017 when coach Kuldeep Kumar introduced him to archery at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Complex. The sport not only gave him a new purpose but also reignited his passion for life.

Rakesh quickly rose through the ranks in para-archery. He delivered a strong performance at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, finishing 6th in the Men’s Individual Compound Open event. His success continued in international competitions:

  • Gold medal in the Mixed Team event at the 2023 World Archery Para Championships in Pilsen

  • Double gold in Individual and Mixed Team events at the 2023 Asian Para Archery Championships

  • Silver medal in the Men’s Individual Compound Open at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou

At the 2024 Paris Paralympics, Rakesh won a bronze medal in the Mixed Team Compound event alongside 17-year-old Sheetal Devi. He narrowly missed out on an individual medal, falling short by just one point.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements and contribution to Indian para-sports, Rakesh Kumar was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award in January 2025. He became the third para-archer in India to receive this honor, following Harvinder Singh and Sheetal Devi.

Rakesh’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of sport. From facing deep personal struggles to standing tall on the international stage, he continues to inspire countless others with his courage and unwavering spirit.
